A passion for the profession

Youth unemployment in Montenegro represents one of the most challenging issues. Although the number of young people who obtain a bachelor diploma is rising, there are a few challenges that appear for these people in starting their careers. Some of the freshly graduated students seek the job into craftmanship, where demand is usually higher than supply. Others, due to lack of information or often stereotypes, do not show interests toward this field which put them on an endless waiting list for the job within their area of specialisation.

According to the Employment Agency of Montenegro (EAM), state-owned agency, the highest unemployment rate is among social science graduates, with economists and lawyers being frontrunners. The hyperproduction of the diplomas have already made significant problems to the economy, and there is no sign that it could end any time soon. Furthermore, the Ministry of Education announced new reforms which would introduce free public studies on all levels, and it complicates the present situation even more. Therefore, project A passion for the profession is seeking to set forth craftsmanship and the secondary vocational education as an attractive option for young people in Montenegro. Series of workshops and lectures in Bar, Rožaje and Podgorica organised by Stefan Jovanović and Stefan Perović (myself) with support from professor Neđeljko Đurović was intended to present secondary vocational education and craftsmanship as respectable professions. The project is also supported and financed by the Boris Divković Foundation, a respectable member of the European Liberal Forum.

Throughout the project, organisers had been working on data gathering and mapping. It could help in further implementation of the project’s strategy that aims to lower youth unemployment and increase the supply side for craftsmanship. It will be a challenging task that would require cooperation with the public and private sector and more efficient communication with young people. However, it is crucial to create an environment that will stimulate more chances for a better life.
